The award notification letter from CRC Executive Director Anne Murphy
and President Gary Snyder states, "Aqua will be honored for its 125
years of delivering clean water to residents in our area, and the many
investments it has undertaken to provide sustainable management of water
resources, state-of-the-art drinking water treatment technology, and
conservation of natural resources."
Aqua has long been a partner with CRC in protecting the water resources
of the Chester, Crum and Ridley creeks. The Company has provided
financial, logistical and volunteer support for the organization's
annual stream cleanups, riparian tree planting projects, and other
activities and events. In 1999, Aqua acquired the Willistown Woods
wastewater plant that discharges to the Ridley Creek and spent $1.8
million completely rebuilding the plant, bringing it into environmental
compliance. In the past four years, Aqua has invested more than $1
million improving the former Media wastewater plant and collection
system. These investments support the common goals of Aqua and CRC in
protecting the water supply for about a quarter of a million people in
Delaware County. The company has also invested $33 million on upgrades
to the Crum Creek Water Plant on Beatty Road and is presently embarking
on a $14 million upgrade to the Ridley Water Treatment Plant in Media.
CRC's annual dinner provides a forum to recognize individuals and
organizations who have worked to sustain the local natural environment —
making sure future generations can enjoy the same clean water, clean
air, and inspiring natural venues that exist today.
Aqua is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year. The
company traces its roots to the Springfield Water Company founded in
1886 by a group of Swarthmore College professors. The company has since
grown to serve approximately 1.4 million residents in 30 counties
throughout Pennsylvania, including about 1 million in southeastern
Pennsylvania.
